Gold pin decorated with antithetic birds on the head. Poliochni, Lemnos (middle of 3rd millennium BC.).
In the Northeastern Aegean, Poliochni in Lemnos and Troy in Asia Minor become prominent as strong proto-urban centres during the Early Bronze Age (3200-2000 BC), due to metal-working. The "hoards" of gold and metal objects from these two sites show the extent to which wealth was accumulated and demonstrate the creation of social classes.
