Statue of a kouros (naked youth), made of Naxian marble. The overlife-size statue, one of the largest and most impressive of its kind, was found along with its plinth , in a deposit in front of the Temple of Poseidon at cape Sounion, Attica. The statue was dedicated to Poseidon and probably stood in front of this temple, where it was deposited after the destruction of the temple and of its votive offerings by the Persians in 480 BC.
