Marble funerary kouros (naked youth) from Merenda, Attica.
About 540-530 BC.
Funerary kouros, made of Parian marble. The statue was found in the necropolis of the ancient deme Myrrhinous together with the kore (maiden) Phrasikleia (inv. no. 4889). The left leg is advanced. The arms are slightly bent at the elbows and just separated from the thighs. On his head he wears a diadem with flammiform decoration. The hair sits in shell-like curls on the forehead and hangs down the back in beaded tresses. Red colour is preserved on the hair, the eyebrows and the nipples.
