Marble base of a funerary kouros (naked youth) with relief representations from Athens.
Base of a funerary kouros with relief representations, made probably of Parian marble. It was found in the Kerameikos, built into the Themistokleian wall. The statue would have stood on the grave of an athlete. On the top of the rectangular block is a cavity to receive the plinth of the statue. The three sides of the base are decorated in relief: on the front side are depicted youths playing a game rather like hockey, while on the others are depicted four-horse chariots and hoplites.
