Marble Grave stele of Mnesagora and Nikochares from Vari, Attica.
420-410 BC.

Grave stele, made of Pentelic marble. It was found at Anagyrous, in the vicinity of Vari, Attica. At the left is depicted a girl standing with her right leg bent and wearing a sleeved chiton and himation. Her wavy hair is taken up in a bun. With her left hand she holds a bird by the wings, offering it to an infant, Nikochares, depicting on one knee, nude, tries to stand up and reaches out his hands to grasp the bird. The epigram, carved in four lines on the epistyle, informs us that they are brother and sister perished together and that the stele was erected by their parents.
