“Station: MUSEUM”

A photographic exhibition
by Anna Maria Hadjistephanou and Photis Plegas G.
Inner Atrium of the Museum

The National Archaeological Museum, within its cultural scope, hosts the photographers Anna Maria Hadjistephanou and Photis Plegas G., who present an exhibition titled “Station: MUSEUM” in the inner Atrium of the Museum.

The photographers attended to the inhabitants of the neighborhood of the National Archaeological Museum, and asked them to be photographed in the exhibition galleries and the Museum Garden.

What initially triggered this photographic show was the photographic exhibition of Theo Chalmers, My Ashmolean My Museum, in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, in 2009.

The main aim of the photographers here, though, was to allow the inhabitants of the areas surrounding the Museum to express their personal relationship with the specific space, creating thus a picture-reflection of the new role the Museum is about to play in the inner centre areas of the city. A role dictated by the shift of the existing social, geographical and ideological balance, and at the same time by the needs shaping contemporary Athens.
Thirty two people posed for the photographers in different areas of the Museum, after discussing their choices with the photographers. The resulting exhibits bring forward very interesting views of how people, both the photographers and the models, perceive themselves within the specific area, while they also enlighten different views of the Museum's historical, social and cultural identity.
