October -Month for Art Beyond Sight Awareness

Blind or partially-sighted persons will have the opportunity to touch exact copies of typical figurines on display in the permanent exhibition of the National Archaeological Museum during October 2010.

The National Archaeological Museum invites members of the Greek Union of the Blind (National Federation, Hellenic Association, Lighthouse for the Blind in Greece) and individuals who are blind or partially-sighted to take part in guided tours round the new exhibition of ancient clay figurines, which opened in 2009.

The verbal description in the Exhibition Gallery is followed by touch of exact replicas of typical types of figurine.

Boeotian clay figurine

Material: Clay
Provenance: Thebes
Date: Early 7th c. B.C.
Inv. no. - Exhibition Room: inv. no. 5635 - Room 50, Case 20

Handmade female figurine with movable legs. Bell-shaped body with modelled breasts, tall neck ending in bird-like face. Earrings were probably fitted in the large, pierced ears. A vertical hole on the top of the head was used to suspend the figurine. The arms, held in a gesture of epiphany or adoration, are rendered as two flat projections, with seven fingers. One of the large legs ends in five and the other in six toes. Red paint was used in the decoration of the clothing and shoes.

This figurine was the inspiration for the mascots of the 2004 Olympic Games held in Athens, Phoibos and Athena.
