A fragment of a grave stele from Athens

Material: Marble
Provenance: Grave stele from Athens
Date: Early 4th century B.C.
Dimensions: Height 0.66 m., width: 0.35 m.
Exhibition place: Room 58, Case 6, inv. no. 1993

Found in 1873 in Athens, in Mouson St.
A little slave girl, to judge from her sleeved chiton made of coarse cloth and the tightly tied head band, removes a doll from an oblong box (pyxis) and puts it in the outstretched palm of her mistress. The toy must have been of the usual articulated type, although it is not depicted as such.
